“Because it's a wordless art form, I think it's important for burlesque performers to go into the audiences and be body, and be over-the-top, and be smart and eloquent, and tell people what it's all about.”
A leading figure in the American burlesque revival, Miss Dirty Martini has become an underground celebrity and a favorite of the legends of burlesque who performed in the 1940's and 1950's. Featured in the January 2010 issue of V Magazine with a five-page editorial photographed by Karl Lagerfeld at the Chanel Atelier in Paris, she has also posed for Mario Sorrenti, Terry Richardson, Roxanne Lowitt and Andres Serrano. Miss Martini has headlined burlesque shows across the US and Europe, and has been featured in the following books: New Burlesque; Burlesque, The New Bump and Grind; Burlesque: From Gaslight to Spotlight Fantasies; and The Velvet Hammer.
She tours extensively in the US, headlining at Burlesque festivals and with Dita VonTeese in her elaborate road show, Strip Strip Hooray. She made a splash on British TV with appearances on The Paul O'Grady Show, and in Italy on Sky Uno's Lady Burlesque TV series, where she appeared the "La Dolce Diva" show, backed by a 17-piece orchestra featuring musicians from the heyday of 1960's Italian cinema. She has also taught her fan dance principles to Margaret Cho and performed alongside the famous comedian in her Off-Broadway hit, The Sensuous Woman.
Miss Martini’s stunning appearance on the red carpet invigorated journalists at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, where Mathieu Amalric’s movie, Tournée (On Tour) won the award for Best Director and the International Film Critics Award. She is featured in the movie as a star of The Cabaret New Burlesque. In the wake of the film’s popularity, she is selling out theaters in France.
She can also be seen in the Scissor Sisters Filthy Gorgeous music video, and she makes a glamorous cameo appearance in John Cameron Mitchell’s hit film, Shortbus. A documentary by Gary Beeber, Dirty Martini and the New Burlesque, premiered in June 2010 and continues to inspire new burlesque performers everywhere.
In EXPOSED, Dirty Martini performs Mafioso and The Patriot Act.
