Jim Coleman

ABOUT JIM COLEMAN — COMPOSER

In 2008, Jim Coleman was brought in to compose several tracks of original music for Beth B's film, EXPOSED, including the main musical theme. He subsequently produced additional tracks with musical collaborators Monkeyworks, The Children and Sinner G. His involvement in the film grew as he brought in other musicians — The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, J.G. Thirlwell, Elysian Fields and Micheline Van Hautem — to contribute to what became an extraordinarily rich and exciting soundtrack.

Classically trained in piano and French horn, Jim Coleman shocked the indie rock scene in the 1990s with his seminal New York City band, Cop Shoot Cop, playing alongside the likes of Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Helmet, and Marilyn Manson. By the mid 1990’s, Coleman had started composing music for independent films. This was an organic evolution, as he had earned a BFA in film at SUNY Purchase.

Through the years, Coleman has worked with numerous directors, including numerous projects with Beth B, Hal Hartley, Todd Phillips, Richard Kern and Danny Leiner. Films he has scored have picked up awards at both the Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival. Coleman has also composed original music for many TV one-offs and series, broadcast on ZDF, HBO, PBS, A&E, and TLC.

From the late 1990’s to the present, Coleman has been releasing original music and doing remixes as Phylr. This material is beat- driven electronica, firmly rooted in sound collage with a strong cinematic sensibility. Coleman has also collaborated with Italian composer Teho Teardo to create Here; and with J.G. Thirlwell to create Baby Zizanie.

In August 2012, as Jim Coleman, he released his first ambient album, Trees, which has received widespread critical acclaim. The album features several A-list collaborators Kirsten McCord on cello, Ellen Fullman on her long stringed instrument, Dawn McCarthy on vocals, and Phil Puleo on various instruments. Coleman is currently performing live, while simultaneously creating a follow-up album to Trees.
